Competitor Spotlight: Arnel D.

Arnel D.

CrossFitting since: 2008

Strengths: Pull-ups, double unders, and bodyweight movements

Need to Improve on: Snatch and heavy lifting

Have you done the Open before? If so how many times?

Yes, so many fricken times.

What are you looking forward to in the Open?

Pull-ups and Muscle-ups. But mostly the fun, and excitement. I love watching people get their first Pull-up or Muscle-up, and also the drama that always seems to happen during the Open- mostly between Dave Castro and everyone else.

What are you not looking forward to?

Wall Balls and Overhead Squats, or a long chipper with no time cap- like that 16.5 bunch of bullshit.

Are you anticipating a “first” in the Open, like a first Pull-up, Box Jump or Muscle up? How about a PR?

I’d really like to get a good Snatch PR.

When you get into that “dark place” in a workout how do you handle it?

I grunt, make a lot of noise, laugh and talk to myself. I say things like, “Come on! Just Go.” or I sing that song, “Gonna have some fun tonight… gonna have some fun tonight…” (From that song, Long Tall Sally. I got that from the movie, Predator. It works). But mostly I think about how good it’s going to feel when it’s over and eating the nice protein packed meal I plan to reward myself with afterward.

Favorite workout music?

Rock and EDM. I love the classic alternative rock from Ministry, Metallica, 1000 Homo DJ’s. Then there’s the 80’s Freestyle too, like “Boogie Down Bronx” and “Diamond Girl”.

If you were to choose either “Murph” or “Fran” for a workout of the day which would you choose?

Fifty minutes of Murph over ten minutes of Fran any day! Fran is so fricken painful!

I like… (fill in the blanks) having family fun nights, working out on hot, humid days, the smell of Hoppe’s No. 9, a nice fitting, tailored suit, the euphoria of pushing through a hard workout, red sunsets, dark red chrome, large, bright full moons, deep bass, learning a new skill, justice when it is served proportionately, ancient history, American history, when the underdog rises and taking a full, deep and invigorating breath of fresh air.
