Tell us about your sports & fitness background.
I grew up doing calisthenics but not sports. I was always one of the last kids picked for a team in gym class. I started doing group fitness, strength, and cardio when I moved to Chicago in my 20’s. I enjoy working out with others as well as on my own.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
I did an obstacle event with my friends from another gym and performed pretty poorly. I knew I needed to work on functional fitness. A good friend, who is very obese, loves doing CrossFit. She gave me the confidence to try it. My first WOD was a bit of a shock. It’s one thing to be told about the intensity, another to experience it. Every class I take is the same, challenging but not impossible.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)
I know that while I look the same (have to nail that emotional eating thing) I have gained strength. More important, I have gained confidence.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
I went white water rafting for the first time and I was more confident/less scared than I would have been before I started doing CrossFit. On a side note, I have started brewing kombucha as a result of meeting someone at CFC.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.
It’s been a pleasure to learn about CrossFit and meet new people. I’m looking forward to a bunch of “firsts” in the future.

Any advice for people just getting started?
Be patient with yourself. Modify when/where you need to. Listen to your body. As you learn new moves, challenge yourself. Never sacrifice form for time/reps. Get to know the instructors and other classmates.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I have two dogs, so I walk them a lot! I also run, bike, and enjoy trying new sports and activities. I am a foodie and a “wino” – love to try new cuisines, cook, drink wine. I also work out at the Park Place Rec Center and have become friends with many people there. I’m in a book group as well.
