Tell us about your sports & fitness background.
I have always been a runner. I still run a lot. I like to do road races and half marathons….not sure I will ever do a full marathon. I ran track and cross country and then I coached girls track when I taught high school. About 2 years ago I realized that there was a significant gap in my fitness so I began looking for things to add to my running routine and eventually found CrossFit.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
Initially, I have to admit, I was a huge skeptic of Crossfit and never thought I would do it. I began working with the strength and fitness coordinator at the school I was teaching at. I told him my goals and he began having me do workouts with him. Little did I know that he is also the Olympic Weightlifting coach at the CrossFit box in the town he lives in! After a few weeks he finally told me I had been doing CrossFit the whole time. I bought the Groupon for Caliber that week.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)
I am stronger! I love the new definition I see and more importantly the new strength I have. Even my running has improved because of Crossfit. I have seen the CrossFit definition of becoming “fit” happen to me in just the 6-7 months I have been at Caliber.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
I never expected to become a Level 1 Trainer! I never expected to gain such a passion for CrossFit. I want to keep taking classes and learning and training in CrossFit. I went from a pretty big critic of CrossFit to a huge proponent who will tell anyone who will listen how amazing it is.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.
The Crossfit moment I initially think of was when I was in the middle of Lupe’s birthday workout and realized that while I had already managed to do 22 man-makers with 5 burpies on the minutes every minute, I still had 20 more to go!!! And I was the only one in class that day. It was brutal but after I successfully finished the workout in under 20 minutes I was so proud of myself. I still think about that workout when I am doing something difficult in the box or out. I tell myself, “If you can make it though that workout only a few months into doing Crossfit, you can do anything!”

I also love the any workout at Caliber. I love the way everyone supports and pushes each other. There’s always such a great vibe when I walk in to the box, even if it is a hard workout on the board for the day. I always look forward being in the box with everyone.

Any advice for people just getting started?
No one is watching you and judging during the workout. We are all tired and just focused on getting through it ourselves. Don’t be scared of being the last one to finish. If you are the last one it means you are lifting heavy and making gains through that work. Plus you give the rest of us a chance to cheer for you like we have had others do for us in the past. Knowing everyone is behind you and supporting you is a great feeling and definitely worth it.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
Like I said I love to run. I also love coaching high jump and hurdles. If I’m not active I don’t know what to do with myself! Sometimes I golf but that usually ends up with me pissed off so I don’t do it much haha.
