Favorite WOD: Anything with jump roping, sit ups, or any kind of clean

Least Favorite WOD: Anything with running or pull ups

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
I played a little bit of basketball in middle school and high school, but that is it as far as sports go. My husband is a personal trainer and PE teacher, and we have been together for 14 years. Since I met him, my fitness level has increased as well as my healthy eating, and crossfit just expands that for me.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

I had a friend that did it and she invited me to one of the ‘Bring a Friend’ days….it was Fight Gone Bad. I literally walked in, did the workout, left, and could barely get up the stairs when I got home, and felt like I was going to die the next three days but I fell in love with it!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

I am soo much stronger in both mind and body…I am lifting and doing things that I never thought I would ever do in my lifetime. Crossfit has increased my confidence with almost every part of my life.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I have always hated hated hated working out. I never enjoyed anything that had to do with going to the gym or classes. I feel like crossfit doesn’t allow me to judge myself because there is no time to do so in the workouts! Because of this, I enjoy coming to class every time.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.

I like the people that I work out with, I have my morning and evening ‘crew’. I like the fact that we can get together as a group and go do different things that I have never done before, like rock climbing. The people are what makes me come back every time.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Take it easy and don’t get discouraged. Scale scale scale.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

No real hobbies or talents. I enjoy reading when I am able to.

Favorite WOD: All of them…when I’m finished!

Least Favorite WOD: None…yet!

Tell us about your sports & fitness background.
I grew up doing calisthenics but not sports. I was always one of the last kids picked for a team in gym class. I started doing group fitness, strength, and cardio when I moved to Chicago in my 20’s. I enjoy working out with others as well as on my own.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
I did an obstacle event with my friends from another gym and performed pretty poorly. I knew I needed to work on functional fitness. A good friend, who is very obese, loves doing CrossFit. She gave me the confidence to try it. My first WOD was a bit of a shock. It’s one thing to be told about the intensity, another to experience it. Every class I take is the same, challenging but not impossible.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)
I know that while I look the same (have to nail that emotional eating thing) I have gained strength. More important, I have gained confidence.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
I went white water rafting for the first time and I was more confident/less scared than I would have been before I started doing CrossFit. On a side note, I have started brewing kombucha as a result of meeting someone at CFC.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.
It’s been a pleasure to learn about CrossFit and meet new people. I’m looking forward to a bunch of “firsts” in the future.

Any advice for people just getting started?
Be patient with yourself. Modify when/where you need to. Listen to your body. As you learn new moves, challenge yourself. Never sacrifice form for time/reps. Get to know the instructors and other classmates.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I have two dogs, so I walk them a lot! I also run, bike, and enjoy trying new sports and activities. I am a foodie and a “wino” – love to try new cuisines, cook, drink wine. I also work out at the Park Place Rec Center and have become friends with many people there. I’m in a book group as well.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

I was tired of the same gym routine so I thought I’d give CrossFit a try and have loved it since.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

I’m leaner, stronger, and more flexible.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I actually WANT to eat healthier. Not just to because I tell myself to but because that’s what my body craves.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.

No specific moment but I love coming into a workout knowing it’s going to kick my butt and being able to joke about it with everyone else there who are about to do the same WOD.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Don’t be afraid or embarrassed if you can’t do a certain skill. You’ll get there eventually, but only if you work at it.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I play my guitar, enjoy movies, and after enough drinks I’m a great dancer!

Favorite WOD: Anything with Weights!

Least Favorite WOD: Anything with Pull ups!

Tell us about your sports & fitness background: Prior to consulting, I was participating in 2-3 indoor/outdoor Volleyball leagues a season.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

Lol, Its all a blur! I remember really being out of breath and really questioning what I was doing. Despite being out of shape and bringing in horrible times Im really happy I stuck with it because results quickly followed.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after): Since starting crossfit, I’ve noticed huge changes in my body, from head to toe! Biggest changes have been my stomach and face.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I’m more active, no longer a couch potato. Instead of staying in bed I wake up and go to Crossfit!

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments. When I enrolled, I thought it was going to be like any other gym; you go in, work out and leave. With Crossfit I realized it wasn’t like that at all. Through time you start seeing familiar faces and developing friendships.

Any advice for people just getting started? It’s unlike any gym experience you’ve encountered. You will quickly realize how out of shape you really are. I joined because I was the heaviest I’ve ever been and needed a change. Stick with it, push yourself and have fun!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? There’s life outside of Crossfit? I enjoy working with my hands, construction work around the house and working on old cars.

Favorite WOD: I love any WOD that involves; split jerk, pull ups and jump rope.

Least Favorite WOD: Any WOD that involves running more than 800 meters.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background. I started playing sports at 4 and continued through high school. I’ve had trainers and was a member at Lifetime for years, working out was always part of my daily routine.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? I heard about the Groupon through a co-worker.I was so bored going to the gym every morning, I needed something different.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

My first WOD was 400 meters of walking lunges. I couldn’t walk for a week, but I knew at that point this is where I wanted to be.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

I am much stronger and confident in my lifting. The other day a co-worker was walking behind me and said, “holy calves”, it was a great feeling!

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.

One of my favorite moments is when I was able to put up 125lb split jerk. I’m not the fastest runner, but everyone in the 5:30am class is so encouraging. I’ve met some great people at CFC!!!

Any advice for people just getting started?
Don’t be nervous to try CrossFit, everyone is there to help you achieve your goals.

Favorite WOD: starting to really enjoy all squats, pull-ups, double-unders.

Least Favorite WOD: box jumps and clean and jerk (even though I’ve only done it a few times, I can’t seem to get the rhythm down)

Tell us about your sports & fitness background: I played sports all through high school, worked out some in college – mostly just cardio and free weights. I didn’t know much about really lifting weights until I joined CFC. I also took up running half marathons the last 2 years.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?: I kept hearing about Crossfit and wanted to know what the hype was about. I saw a Groupon for CFC and it was close to my new job so I thought I would give it a shot. My first WOD was back squats and I was amazed at how far I could actually get down! I even remember Liz telling me “you’ve got really nice form!”

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after): I have seen a lot more definition in my body since I started at CFC. Overall I have a lot of energy, motivation and feel more confident about my body.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?: Besides changes in my body, I am definitely more motivated!

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments: One of my favorite moments at CFC was the fundraiser WOD for Elba and her husband! There was so much energy in the room and everyone kicked butt. The grilling out and drinking afterwards was also fun! I would like to see CFC do more weekend events like that. (good team building)

Any advice for people just getting started? Stick with it! You will be amazed at what you are capable of. A year ago I thought it was impossible for me to even do half of the stuff I can do now. Its satisfying and gives you that “hurt so good” feeling that you won’t want to stop. Oh, and don’t be embarrassed. Everyone cheers you on!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?: I love to spend time with family and friends, shop, read books, organize and expand my graphic design skills.

When did you first start CrossFitting?

I have been inconsistently CrossFitting for 3 – 4 years.

When did you first start training at CFC?

From Day 1

Favorite WOD

I live to tabata.

Least Favorite WOD

I cannot stand the chippers.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background.

I was a gym underachiever throughout high school, the ever brooding punk-rocker that thought I was too cool to participate in organized sports. Later in life I caught adult onset athleticism when I began running 5Ks and working out regularly. Too bad I hate to run.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

Well, my husband started doing these crazy workouts in our bedroom and then our garage after I kicked him out of our bedroom. I decided to give it a try and then I couldn’t walk up or down the stairs for like a week and vow to never step foot in the garage again. Then about every 2-3 months I’d give it another try, but I was definitely not hooked in the beginning. I don’t remember the exact movements of my first WOD.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

I’m definitely a lot stronger both physically and mentally. I am more in tune with my capabilities than I ever have been and I’m not afraid to give new movements a try, but I’m also not afraid to say – “nope, that’s not for me.” I feel lighter, happier and more energetic.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

Well, CrossFit changed my life in big, meaningful ways. Really, it has found it’s way in all aspects of my life.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.

I love when I complete that last rep of any WOD and have that feeling of accomplishment.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Please don’t think that CrossFit is something that you can’t do – it is totally doable for anyone, any age, any skill level.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I love to cook, read and spend time with my wonderful husband and awesome daughter, they are my life.

Favorite WOD: No favorites yet, just trying to figure things out still.

Least Favorite WOD: Maybe cleans because it’s a motion I’m not used to yet..

Tell us about your sports & fitness background.

I played soccer my entire life. I played very competitively on a travel and recreational league at the same time throughout the year until I got into high school. I then played at a Varsity level until junior year. I also played volleyball in high school. Since high school I try working out regularly by running and weightlifting but I needed more guidance and accountability.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

In chiropractic school CrossFit was very popular but it was just students running the club. My friend Nikki showed me CrossFit Caliber and the rest is history. My first WOD at CrossFit Caliber was during the introductory class. I remember being very tired and nauseous from burpees.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

I notice I’m able to squat more without being as sore, my body recovers faster than before and I feel more energy throughout my day.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I used to hate doing things after I get out of work and would rather go home and sleep, not anymore. I actually get excited to go to class now and feel more energy after so I can get things I need done.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Since I consider myself still getting started I think the best thing I can say is do what you can, let the other people in class push you, but don’t compare yourself with what they are doing.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I like doing things around my house, whether it’s antiquing, playing with my dogs, or being outside.

Favorite WOD?

I don’t know that I have a favorite. It depends on the day and my mood. 🙂

Least Favorite WOD?

Wall balls….I am improving but they are not my favorite to do.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background.

I started getting serious about my health and fitness about the time of my mid-twenties. Before that I was eating a lot of fast food and sweets. I also did not exercise that much. I was skinny but not healthy.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

I can’t remember how I found out about Crossfit. I just remember looking up local boxes and finding Crossfit Caliber. My first workout involved lifting weights. I remember liking it and getting positive feedback from the other members in class.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body,
health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

I feel very strong! I am completing movements I never thought I could do.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I handle stress much better when I am working out on a regular basis. The intensity of Crossfit helps with stress a great deal!

Any advice for people just getting started?

Don’t quit! Some days you will feel defeated but the next WOD you just may feel like a warrior!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents
outside of CrossFit?

I enjoy traveling, reading, playing guitar, watching baseball, spending time with family, etc…:)

Favorite WOD

I don’t have one yet but I like kettle bell swings.

Least Favorite WOD

ANYTHING with double unders and burpees 😝

Tell us about your sports & fitness background.

I’ve always considered myself fairly athletic. I ran track, played basketball (I sucked) and was a cheerleader in high school. Went through a period when I was totally into step aerobics (I was the queen of step aerobics 😄…I would go to Friday night step marathons…just nutz). Around 2005 I started distance running and ran my first 5K and have been running ever since. I did my first sprint triathlon last year and will run my first 1/2 marathon in July and another in August. My goal is to do at least one half marathon every year in a different city/state. This year it’s Vancouver! Before starting CrossFit I did a boxing class for a year and before that I did P90X, twice. I enjoy high intensity sports and fitness. I like challenging myself and feeling fit. If I’m not challenged or see results I will move on to something else. That’s why I really enjoy CrossFit because there are so many workouts I can’t do well and I’m determined to learn them. I see myself doing this for a while.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?

My dentist was telling me about it and so I started to do some research. I went to a few intro classes in the city figured I liked it enough and then saw the Groupon for CFC, realized it was close enough to my house (thank goodness). I don’t remember my first WOD but I know I was nervous and started to sweat when I realized it may involve pull-ups😳. But I remember getting through it and told myself I can really get into this.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)

I’m stronger than I thought I was (I told my friends I can deadlift 185lbs…they think I’m a beast..lol😜). I feel off and sluggish when I can’t get to class. After starting CrossFit I’ve become more aware of my diet but I need and want to do better in this area. That in itself is a challenge for me.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I find myself encouraging others to get involved in this sort of fitness…preferably CrossFit.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments.

My fav crossfit moments are when I do something new that I haven’t done before or doing something better than I did it the first time. I’m usually very pleased with myself and get that “you go girl” feeling. I will have to say my fav CFC moment is probably after my first 10 or so times coming to CFC I started learning people’s name and people knew my name and the conversations flowed…I felt like I was a part of the team. The camaraderie of the athletes is so encouraging.

Any advice for people just getting started?

It’s life changing so stick with it, you’ll be happy you did.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I wouldn’t say I have hobbies or talents but I do enjoy a home improvement project every now and then. I enjoy concerts, movies, reading a good book, playing with my doggie and hanging with my girls!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)
I’VE SEEN SO MANY CHANGES, NOT ONLY IN HOW MY BODY LOOKS BUT WHAT I CAN DO. WHEN I STARTED CROSSFIT I WAS 168 POUNDS TODAY I’M 133 POUNDS. I’VE RUN MANY 5KS, AN 8K AND A 10K. Favorite WOD – Anything involving body weight movements and endurance.

Least Favorite WOD – There isn’t anything in particular I don’t like….but wall climbs and walking lunges are on the list of things I don’t love!

Tell us about your sports & fitness background. – I played softball as a kid and danced in high school but didn’t really get into the gym/classes/yoga thing until my mid 20s. Once I met my husband Tim, that’s when I started doing races. (5k’s, 10k’s, half marathon, stair climbs, and just completed my first triathlon!) Crossfit seemed like the next obvious thing to tackle and I was hooked immediately.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? – My friend and trainer started doing crossfit and TRX in California and after doing a few personal training work outs incorporating crossfit movements with him and having a friend in Illinois start crossfitting, I saw a Groupon for the box I used to go to and thought, why not try it? I remember that first WOD having tons of ab mat sit ups and thinking I was going to never finish while Tim was counting down each sit up to cheer me on…. which he still does today! 🙂

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after) – I am definitely stronger than I’ve ever been before. My endurance has gotten much better. Your over all life style changes for the better when you become part of a fitness community.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? – Proving to yourself that you can push yourself to do and try things you’d never thought you’d be able to do before…for me its more of a physical thing…I wouldn’t have ever thought about doing a triathlon if I hadn’t started crossfit!

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFC moments. – Obviously the hilarious night out with everyone at Buffalo Wild Wings! Midnight Murph was a blast too!

Any advice for people just getting started? – Its not as scary as you think it is…everything is scalable…everyone will cheer you along. You’ll be amazed at what you really can do and everyday you’ll get stronger and faster. Don’t let the crossfit stereotypes discourage you from trying a class!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? – Everyone knows I’m a HUGE hockey fan (go Kings go!…. and Hawks… just not when they play eachother 😉 ) Also, I’ve been a hair stylist for 13 years so the beauty industry is very important to me.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
I bought a Groupon for 10 classes at CFC. My first class was a Free Intro Class on a Saturday and the WOD was 3 rounds for reps: Row (cal) 1 min, Ball Slams 1 min, Dead Hang (secs) 1 min, 25 ft. Farmer Carry 1 min, Rest 1 min. I remember feeling excited and a little nervous all at once. After completing it I was hooked.

1. Doing “Murph” on Memorial Day. The meaning behind the workout and Memorial Day made me feel proud to be a part of it. Completing it without using a band for pull-ups was a huge accomplishment for me.

2. Doing “Barbara” for Elba. It was great to see the people of CFC come together to support her and her family.

3. Having my roomie, Dewey, start coming with me to CFC. It has been great watching him improve and grow.

Any advice for people just getting started?
I think it is important to remember it is about your own personal improvement. Just because the person next to you just got their kipping pull-ups and you just got changed from the green to blue band doesn’t mean your accomplishment is any less awesome. You will get there if you keep working at it!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I love art, going on bike rides, and traveling.

November 2013

Favorite WOD?
When we got to swing hammers

Least Favorite WOD?
Anything involving double unders

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
I used to be a dancer and before CrossFit I did alot of hot yoga, running and lounging in the pool at Lifetime.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
I was losing my mind during months 8 and 9 of pregnancy and I found the groupon for cfc. I remember doing ring rows during one of my first work outs and thinking I was never ever going to be able to do pull ups

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF? (before / after)?
I feel pretty awesome, I just did the Warrior Dash and I was like that was so easy. I wish I would have found ths before I had gotten pregnant

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
I’m not afraid to do other stuff in life, my social anxiety has become almost debilitating over the last few years and this has really helped my self confidence alot. I’m still weird and awkward but it’s getting better 🙂

Getting pull ups!

Any advice for people just getting started?
Don’t quit! Once you get rolling its like nothing you’ve ever experienced and it will touch your life in ways you can’t even begin to imagine!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I once rode a mechanical bull in a skirt, I think thats pretty talented.

What is your favorite skill?
I love Olympic lifting days! It doesn’t really matter which skill we are practicing. Lifting heavy things makes me feel strong and I like that I can see progress in new PRs. I like when lifts are incorporated into WODs too. I love the CrossFit joke that says “Oh, you lift weights? What do you do for cardio?” “I lift weights faster.”

What is your least favorite skill?
Everyone says burpees so I think that shouldn’t count! I really dislike ball slams. I have trouble getting the rhythm down and stringing them together. Very frustrating!

How long have you been at CFC and how did you hear about us?
I started just over 7 months ago. My cousin, who is in the navy, told me about CrossFit a few years ago when I told him I was lacking motivation to go to the gym. One day this past summer, I saw a picture of myself that I now use as my “before picture” and decided that I needed a change. I remembered his advice and went searching Groupon. I immediately bought the 20 class package and never looked back.

What is your most improved skill?
I’m most proud of my progress in pull ups. I was stuck on the rings for a long time and one day Michele looked at me and said “If you can do a 200# dead lift, you can get off the rings.” I tried banded pull ups and have gone from black to green/blue and recently green/red. An unassisted pull up is a lofty goal, but one I know I can achieve!

What goals have you been able to hit because of your participation at CFC?
I have lost almost 30# and 20 inches since walking in the door of CFC. I feel stronger, more confident and have way more energy than I have in years. I’m attempting my first 5k in June with my sister and one of my oldest friends. Bacon Chase 2014, here I come!

If you were to give one piece of advice to new CFC members, what would it be?
Get used to always feeling just a little bit sore. That means you’re doing it right. And the best way to never again feel the pain of Day 1 training is to just keep going. That and double unders are hard!
