I’m not sure if you guys have seen the virtual drama that is unfolding between Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, Rocket Community Fitness and the rest of the CrossFit community. It is sad that there is such conflict over this great Civil Rights movement taking place before us. But sometimes for change to happen conflict must occur. Conflict and violence have always been an unfortunate but necessary element to catalyze social change in our country. The Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre were catalysts for the American Revolution and led to our independence from tyrannical rule. The Civil War was a catalyst for the Emancipation Proclaimation that led to the freedom of slaves. And the violence during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s led to dramatic changes in law, society and government. Now we have another great movement happening before us, and things are going to change.
CrossFit, Inc. has been highly criticized lately for not publicly taking a stance in the Black Lives Matter movement. It recently made a statement against racism, but in the interim, Glassman made some remarks that are taken to be hurtful and are causing a rift in the community. Many Affiliates are de affiliating or considering to do so because of this.
CrossFit, the corporation and CrossFit the methodology are two entirely different things. The CrossFit that we do is what we are. We work out together, we suffer together, we grow together and we become better together. We see it in almost every CrossFit gym- people of many races, creeds, colors, professions, sexual orientations and political ideologies coming together in the same class every day, getting along, learning about each other, agreeing with each other, and disagreeing with each other. We have formed bonds and life long friendships with people we never thought we would. Conservatives and Liberals, White, Black and Brown, white collar and blue collar, working out, hanging out, socializing and partying with each other. It is truly amazing what the methodology of CrossFit has created for us!
We are in a trying time right now, and CrossFit, Inc. is undergoing some major backlash. It may be a hard thing for a company that has traditionally backed law enforcement to support the Black Lives Matter movement because it may look like they are turning their backs on police officers. But you can do both. You can help further the cause against racism and, at the same time, support law enforcement. There is no conflict in that. What CrossFit, Inc. is being perceived to be doing or not doing will hopefully be settled soon.
But for now we are going to keep doing what we are doing. We will work out together, suffer together, grow together and help each other get fitter and lead healthier lives no matter what color we are, what religion we practice, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or whatever. The methodology of CrossFit has given us a special gift that we can use to crush racism and racial injustice. So keep your heads up and stay strong. This too shall pass, and we will all be better because of it.
